Prototyping is used to verify the design and mechanical properties of the product. It is the process of importing the design from the virtual to the physical world. There are several types of prototypes: some are simply visualizing the product to have a real tangible idea of the product. This is why Stryker uses samples made out of plastic (fig. 1). Other prototypes are composed out of proprietary materials. After reaching agreement from all three parties (surgeons, engineers and marketeers), a couple of implants will be produced in proper material in order to perform different mechanical and chemical tests.
