Planning

The plan phase is typically led by a Marketing team of Stryker and is the initial multi-disciplinary activity, aimed at framing the project content. This phase mainly entails the identification and business implication of customer's needs. For this reason, Stryker’s engineers and marketeers are working very close with surgeons around the world to develop the concept of new prostheses. “For medical devices, the cooperation between surgeons and engineers builds the key to innovation, both for technological advancement and for economic success”. [1]

In this phase, the Marketing team is first forming the actual development team consisting of surgeons, marketeers and engineers. The Marketeers develop a plan that identifies the marketing strategies, positioning, and tactics that will support the launch of the new product. They also generate a checklist describing all aspects of an early phase required to be completed by operations.

Medical engineers are engineers with strong analytical skills and technical competence paired with distinctive know-how in medicine. In the planning phase, they provide technical input in terms of rough designs (figure 1), form study models and reports to determine the anticipated design approach. This entails also an rough estimation of required design features which can be altered to ease the manufacturability of the product. An effective assessment should increase the quality and usability of the product while reducing the original cost estimate to manufacture the product.
